Soccer Photography

Kids today will have their entire lives almost completely photo documented.  Soccer however, is often a glaring hole containing only posed team shots or a mud soaked post game snapshot.  Action shots, good action shots, are rare.

There are some pretty good reasons for this. The first being soccer fields are very big. To get a tight action shot you have to be close to the action, or have a very large zoom lens. Professional photographers use large lenses that can weigh up to twelve pounds and cost thousands of dollars.

The second reason is that consumer point and shoot cameras are often very slow. You push the button and the picture you thought you were going to take has passed you buy.

Fortunately there are lots of things you can do to get good action shots without mortgaging your house to buy a bunch professional photography equipment.  The following guide is designed to provide you with some tips on buying a camera and how to shoot specifically for soccer.

  • Which camera to buy, DSLR or Compact Point and Shoot?
  • What kind of lens should I buy?
  • Where to position yourself on the sidelines?
  • How can I improve my timing?
  • How to make great prints

I have to warn you though, photography can be an addictive and subsequently expensive hobby.
